Something Can Be Done About It

13 Reasons You Shouldn’t Drop Ecstasy

You would think that the average person wouldn’t need more reasons to stay away from Ecstasy.  However, unfortunately for all of us, we do.

It’s come up repeatedly in surveys done by the Church of Scientology and others, that one of the major reasons why people get in to drugs in the first place is lack of data on what drugs are and what they actually do to you.

As a quote from the marijuana section of this new site from the Foundation for a Drug-Free World:

Because a tolerance builds up, marijuana can lead users to consume stronger drugs to achieve the same high. When the effects start to wear off, the person may turn to more potent drugs to rid himself of the unwanted conditions that prompted him to take marijuana in the first place.

Marijuana itself does not lead the person to the other drugs: people take drugs to get rid of unwanted situations or feelings. The drug (marijuana) masks the problem for a time (while the user is high). When the “high” fades, the problem, unwanted condition or situation returns more intensely than before. The user may then turn to stronger drugs since marijuana no longer “works.”

However, if you read down posts in Digg, you’ll unfortunately find a high number of people (possibly already drug users themselves) which will go to no end to extoll the benefits of marijuana and why people are ‘dumb’ to oppose legalization of this drug.  Similarly, ecstasy is commonly pawned off as a ‘fun party drug’ and a ‘sex enhancer’ when it has completely disastrous effects.

I just posted a story regarding such on Digg, and the first two comments I got on the story were pro-marijuana.  So there’s definitely a lack of education here on the effects — both short and long-term — that marijuana can have, and does have.

Never mind something more serious like ecstasy.

I just read the booklet The Truth About Ecstasy, which is available on the site as a part of their drug education kit that they get donated to schools and such.  It’s factually horrifying what this drug can do to a person.

Anyhow, rather than explain, I would hope you’d check this out for yourself.  The whole point, really, is to educate people before they start on drugs — not after they’re already destroyed by them.  So, of course, the name of the game is to get this to as many people as possible.

You refer us to a site that claims Ecstasy is addictive and then I’m supposed to take any of this seriously? I don’t doubt the drug has harmful effects but I’m not going to believe any information I read when it has outright lies in it about scientific facts.

Niki – thanks for the post. Do you have a site that documents this? I’d be interested — as what I’ve read on http://www.drugfreeworld.org/ clearly states the dangers of this thing. If you know something else though that you could share, let me know.

Why knock ecstasy? it’s not of question whether ecstasy can be harmful, because it CAN (although not proven and the most recent and ‘legitimate’ study sponsored by the US government was absolutely and entirely debunked 2 or so years back)… but how do these claims compare to other drugs that are legal such as Alcohol, Caffeine, and prescription drugs?

Everything provides a high, just a different degree, different “payback”, and different side effects.

Food – Pleasurable food lets the body release dopamine. We experience this everyday. “Bad” food (fatty foods, sweet foods) are arguably drugs since they achieve the same thing with an equivalently intense side effect (potential obesity, low energy)

Alcohol – provides this same escape you claim is so bad from mary J. There are more alcoholics in the United States and more alcohol related deaths, fights, and other social problems than any other drug. Drunk driving, anyone?

Caffeine – Basically “legal speed”… it gets you working, gets you excited about whatever task at hand but for a short while. Caffeine IS ADDICTIVE as seen by the millions of people that can’t seem to get through the day without a coffee, tea, or energy drink. The payback is headaches, nausea, and insomnia and addiction.

You cannot deny the relative benefits/drawbacks of these drugs!

You also can’t goto a website that is clearly ONLY about a “drug free world” and cite sources from it. What about the counter-points? Of course there are going to be ignorant people who accept what they’re told the first and only time. That’s why propoganda works.

Goto erowid.com or wikipedia if you really want facts.

    I’m done. That’s my 2 cents.

Is there a need for counterpoints when you’re talking about drugs that cause dain brammage and suicide and death and some fairly obvious downsides like that? To me, it’s like saying “don’t run over children”, but needing to cite a counterpoint as their may be some plusses.

Dain Bammage eh? Nice argument. MDMA causes suicide and death? Cite some sources, man. The only deaths resulting from MDMA are from people who (stupidly) drank too much water and died from water intoxication.

dude, i’ve done over 400 ecstacy tabs (probably more) and I’m still just as witty and smart. I’m gradating college in may… i hate they f*cking nay sayers. try it if you want to, but don’t look down on people that party. If you get addicted or feel you have a problem, then there is no shame in getting help. People freak when I tell them the drugs i’ve done multiple times. I love the experience and think some people should try too.

“people take drugs to get rid of unwanted situations or feelings”

what the hell? i took ecstasy to GAIN situations and feelings

you may think this is ‘sad’ but some of the best nights in my life are when im thizzn. Make friends, fall in love, sing, dance, open pathways in my mind, not have to worry about the negatives of everyday life but the postives being magnified to there full extent.

    AND JUST FOR THE RECORD:
there isnt going to be a drug free world: stop something that feels great, is addicitve, and makes millions of tax free CASH

    dont think so

i love life, i love ecstasy. i love weed.. when im coming down 😉

    Couple things that bothered me.

    jetteroheller:
“Is there a need for counterpoints when you’re talking about drugs…”
Of COURSE there is a need for counterpoints. There is always a need for counterpoints. Obviously you can decide for yourself whether or not they are valid (as I can’t think of any that are pro-running over children), but you can’t have an educated opinion on something if you don’t even listen to the other side of the argument. And you should never take a firm stance on something which you haven’t fully educated yourself on. My opinion.

    and Drew:
“The only deaths resulting from MDMA are from people who (stupidly) drank too much water and died from water intoxication.”
Huh? The ONLY deaths from ecstasy are from water intoxication? I think that’s a stretch. It is possible to OD on it after all, especially for children.
“Goto erowid.com or wikipedia if you really want facts.”
Really?! Everyone knows wikipedia is not a valid source for anything.
I’m on your side man, but argue a little better.

I agree with pinga. I don’t think drugs are all about getting fucked up, or taking my focus away from all the terrible voids in my life, but it’s kinda more about just… seeing things from a different perspective for a little while. Opening up your mind, noticing things you didn’t notice before, sitting in a different world for a night. I don’t judge people who aren’t into that kinda thing, because of course there’s always a chance of something going wrong. Obviously there is some risk involved, but I think that drugs like ecstasy & acid have a reputation a lot worse than they should be.

    Hi,

I came here for a 13 reasons “list” and found most of the article to be about marijuana. Although the blogger is very informative, in the future, perhaps decide on a better title to your page.

    Good luck in the future.

First of all, anything you say about drugs should be solely from empirical evidence, not from a biased anti-drug sight. Thats like trusting in Bush that there were WMDs. As with any inhibiting substance, it is when you have stopped using them to open doors, and began using them to block doors that you have problems. I drink coffee to wake up, not to stay awake all day. I smoke marijuana to relax and feel at ease, not to be stupid. I take robitussin for my cough, not to hallucinate. I drink beer to have a good time with friends, not to drive and kill someone. You can do anything in excess, or you can be rational. It’s a personal and ethical choice. I use drugs to open my mind, not to keep things out. I certainly don’t do it to get “fucked up” life gives me enough of that already.

Yes, of course there is always a need for counterpoints. Even in your outlandish example: “Should we run over kids?” Fortunately there is no PROS to running over little kids, lol. But there needs to be counterpoints in every argument if you want to have an real conversation that gets anywhere. But if you want to shove your %#^* down everybody’s throat in the form of closed-minded anti-drug slander, that’s a different story.

Is Ecstasy completely harmless? Of course not. Can I guarantee that it will never cause any damage to your brain? Of course not. But “never” is an outlandish word to use anyway. Any substance that causes a forced release of neurotransmitters in your brain has the potential to cause neurological problems. Hell even a woman drinking a lot of coffee while pregnant can cause slight changes in the baby’s brain to cause its neurology to be slightly out of whack for the rest of its life. But yet coffee is damn near a religion to some people.

The world we live in is not a black square taped onto a white wall. It’s not that simple. It’s not just RIGHT or WRONG. It is an amazingly complex and beautiful place that no one can fully understand. To say that Ecstasy is 100% good or 100% evil is to be closed-minded, which in my opinion is the last thing I personally want to be. Ecstasy is not the answer to all of life’s problems. But it can shine a light for you to see how wonderful and amazing the world really is, and it opens doors in your mind and heart for you to understand new ways to life happily.

In a trance song by Hallucinogen called LSD he uses some pretty awesome vocal segments… “Why is it that people think it’s so evil? What is it about it, that it scares people, so deeply? Even the guy that invented it, what is it? Because they’re afraid that there’s more to reality, than they’ve been fronted. There are doors, that they’re afraid to go in, and they don’t want us to go in there either, because if we go in there, we might learn somethin’ that they don’t know. And that makes us a little out of their control.”

What we need is more open-minded drug education instead of forced negative anti-drug propaganda which causes people to experiment ignorantly and even causes there to be more dangerous drugs in circulation (meth, heroine, bad X-pills). Sorry to say, I doubt this will happen anytime soon if ever. But that’s my thought. We just need to be smart and look out for each other like brothers and sisters if we are going to take Ecstasy and other party drugs.

    – If you choose to use it safely and responsibly, MDMA (Ecstasy) can be a really great experience. Get a pill testing kit if you can, and if you can’t then just take it slow until you know how the pills make you feel. Don’t over do it. Let the drug set you off, then make your own roll happen from within.

Never think you are right, because there is no right or wrong. There is only the truth.

I personally love Ecstasy. It changed my life for the better.

    To “u know who”
Perhaps you shouldn’t be calling other people
“retarts”. First of all, it’s spelt “retard”. Second of all, given the way you speak and your ability to spell, you may actually be retarded and therefore you shouldn’t be knocking your own kind.
